Product review

This special edition commemorates a decade of the cooperative strategy game and comes packaged in a custom metal case reminiscent of vintage medical kits. The box includes a larger world map, oversized player ID cards that display each role’s abilities, molded plastic character miniatures, and numerous wooden components that echo the first edition’s tactile feel.

Art throughout the set has been redrawn with a retro aesthetic to give the whole game a period look. The wooden cubes and markers replace the standard cardboard and plastic tokens in many places, and petri-dish–style trays or containers are provided for holding infection cubes during play. All physical elements are produced to a higher finish than the base release: thicker board stock, sculpted minis, and a heavy-gauge metal storage case with handle and clasp.

From the designer Matt Leacock, the rules remain a cooperative race: players assume distinct roles, take turns performing actions to treat outbreaks, share knowledge, and research cures before epidemics spiral out of control. The oversized role cards and sculpted pieces help new and experienced teams track abilities and plan turns more clearly. This edition is meant both as a playable anniversary tribute and as a collector’s-quality presentation of the classic gameplay.

Pros

  • Premium packaging and tactile components
  • Larger map and clearer, oversized role cards
  • Cooperative gameplay encourages teamwork

Cons

  • Steeper learning curve for newcomers
  • Metal case may arrive with surface blemishes
  • Size differences may complicate compatibility with expansions

VerdictThis anniversary release elevates the original cooperative experience with premium components and a nostalgic presentation. The custom metal case, larger world map, and detailed plastic figures make setup and immersion more satisfying, while wooden tokens and oversized role cards honor the game’s roots. Expect the same rule depth that rewards teamwork and planning; newcomers will need a few plays

    Arrived scratched but still striking

The tin had multiple scratches on arrival, which was disappointing, though I can touch them up with some paint. Even with those flaws, it looks like a true collector’s edition and I’m excited to play with friends once gatherings are possible again.

Well-made edition, may suit casual groups best

The game is widely known and this edition is beautiful. Veteran players used to more complex games might find it less deep, but it’s great for occasional play or introducing newcomers. The metal medical-kit style box is faithful and the minis are fun to paint; I would have preferred translucent infection cubes but others like the wooden ones.

Solid lockdown co-op — quality parts

Bought this to play during lockdown and it was a great cooperative experience for the family. Nice wooden pieces, big map and plastic character models; easy to learn and games finish in under an hour. Not certain about fit with older expansions due to different component sizes.

  4. Sea Salt Air 5/5

Lovely visuals and strong teamwork mechanics

Played often with my clever 7-year-old who loves it. It teaches cooperation and the idea of quarantining while remaining fun. The board and virus markers look fantastic, the minis are well made, and the heavy metal case is impressive. It has a learning curve but is rewarding once you get the hang of it.

Kids engaged and focused — a great family night

I hesitated at first because it was a collector-style set, but we’re very happy. The metal case and components feel premium and the presentation draws you in. My 7- and 9-year-olds were focused and understood their roles quickly; even my youngest with ADHD stayed engaged and helped plan moves to fight the outbreaks.

  6. Lynn Jordan 5/5

    More intense, more immersive edition

We’ve played the game for years and this release feels more immersive and tense. The presentation heightens the stakes and keeps everyone on edge in a good way. A welcome update for longtime players.

Note: all game text is in English

The game components and rulebook are English-only and that wasn’t obvious in the listing. Returns were straightforward when needed.

Perfect gift for a fan of the series

My partner is a big fan and was thrilled. The metal case is attractive and the components are noticeably nicer than the standard edition: thicker board, sturdier pieces, and finely detailed miniatures make this a high-quality package.

Highly recommended as a thoughtful present

Gifted this to my boyfriend who is a huge fan; he absolutely loved it and had been wanting this edition for a long time. Very satisfied with the choice.

  10. Mark 5/5

Nice component upgrade — petri dishes are handy

The new tokens enhance the experience and the petri-dish holders for infection cubes are a smart touch. Overall a worthwhile update for fans who value component quality.

    Collector’s appeal despite some flaws

As a fan this collector’s set was an easy buy and it looks fantastic. It’s a novelty item, though, and one should expect that—there was a misprint in my copy, but the overall presentation is enjoyable if you know what you’re getting.

  12. S. Beladi 5/5

    Gorgeous production values

A lovely addition for collectors: the artwork and production are impressive. Gameplay doesn’t change from the original, but the whole package is a pleasure to display and play.
