Product review
Product form and pack: Barrier Reef Labs LPS Grow Formula arrives as a 90 g container of small Micro-Pearl particles designed specifically for coral feeding. The pellets are formulated to remain intact in saltwater so corals can capture them rather than having the feed dissolve instantly.
How it behaves and why it’s different: The micro-pearl structure keeps the food suspended instead of dispersing like fine powders. That means corals can take in particles directly, which increases feeding efficiency and limits widespread nutrient release. Because the beads remain whole, uneaten material can be removed by normal filtration after feeding to reduce the risk of nutrient spikes.
Mixing and preparation: Prepare a fresh suspension using tank water only, typically at ratios between 1:4 and 1:10 (food to tank water) to form an even paste or slurry. Slight floating or light clumping during mixing is normal. Avoid using freshwater to mix and always make a fresh portion for each feeding event.
Feeding routine and dosing guidance: Recommended base dosing is 0.3–0.5 g per 100 L per feeding, adjusted for stocking density using a 0.8–1.2 multiplier as needed. For targeted feeds, turn off the skimmer, reduce flow, and allow a controlled feeding window of roughly 15–20 minutes before restoring normal filtration. Monitor coral response and check for any remaining particles or rising nitrate/phosphate as signs to reduce dose.
Compatibility and combined use: The formula is optimized for LPS corals but remains usable with SPS, soft corals, and mixed reefs. It’s normal for fish and invertebrates to take some particles. When pairing this product with other coral foods, reduce overall feeding by about 20–30% to avoid cumulative nutrient accumulation. Regular fasting days and observation of coral uptake help maintain balance.
Expected results and water stability: The product aims to provide controlled nutrient release so NO3 and PO4 don’t spike immediately after feeding. With steady use, corals commonly show fuller polyps, thicker tissue, and enhanced natural coloration. Proper mixing, targeted delivery, and post-feed filtration removal help maintain cleaner water and long-term reef stability.
Pros
- Particles remain intact for targeted feeding
- Clear mixing and dosing guidelines
- Uneaten beads removable via filtration
Cons
- Requires manual mixing and target feeding
- May clump or float during preparation
- Needs skimmer and flow management during feeds
VerdictThis Micro-Pearl formula offers a hands-on feeding approach that helps corals ingest intact particles rather than letting nutrients disperse immediately. For hobbyists who prefer target feeding and careful dosing, the product provides clear mixing and feeding steps, measurable base dosing, and manageable cleanup via filtration. Expect gradual nutrient release, visible polyp response, and improved

Slow to take on water
The flakes take a while to absorb moisture and can sit dry on the surface, which looked odd. I’m going to spot-feed and watch my Duncans before deciding fully.

Good quality and happy corals so far
Been alternating this with another feed and so far it’s performed well. My corals seem healthy and I’m pleased with the quality.

Corals responded quickly
Target feeding triggered a rapid reaction — my Duncan grew two new heads in a short time after starting this feed.

Likely to repurchase
No dramatic growth yet, but I’ve been easing in with small doses. Corals look content and I’m hopeful increasing doses will show results.

Not for me — clumps and floats
I wasn’t impressed. The granules repel water and form clumps that stick to the surface and get pulled into my filter sock. A competing product soaks and sinks better for my setup.

Surprisingly popular with my isopods
I thought this was for fish but tested it on isopods and springtails — they loved it. Low mold, high calcium, and it boosted breeding in my colony. A fun extra for crustaceans.

Works differently than powders
This isn’t a dissolving powder but tiny beads that blend into a paste (I used roughly 1:2 food to water). I spot-fed with a pipette and corals opened up and ate. I feed with flow off so uptake is maximized. The mix stays suspended, so fish can access it too. Overall a solid, reasonably priced option to try.
