Cheesy Bacon BBQ Baked Bean Hot Dogs with Onions

Hello and welcome! If this is your first visit, make yourself comfortable—grab a warm drink and explore. This blog holds nearly a thousand recipes, and right now I’m sharing a mini-series focused on transforming plain hotdogs into exciting, family-pleasing meals. These Cheesy Barbecued Baked Bean Hotdogs with Bacon & Onions are the kind of comfort food that gets everyone racing to the table.

My husband lovingly calls these “Beanie Wienies” and declared them the best hotdogs he’s had in a long time. I have to admit I enjoyed several variations from the series, but these baked-bean-topped hotdogs stand out for being flavorful, budget-friendly, and quick to prepare—perfect for busy weeknights or feeding a crowd without breaking the bank.

One of the great things about this recipe is flexibility. If you’re only making a couple of hotdogs, reserve the extra beans as a warm side. I often add crisp bacon for texture and flavor, but you can also bulk up the beans with cooked ground beef, sausage, or drained canned black beans for a heartier topping. The extra sauce left from removing some beans for the dogs keeps everything saucy and delicious.

For buns I love homemade or semi-homemade hoagie rolls. One simple trick: thaw a one-pound loaf of frozen dough in the fridge overnight, then divide it into three ropes, place on a greased baking sheet, and let rise in the oven with just the light on. Once doubled, bake at 350ºF until golden—about 20 minutes. Cool on a rack before slicing so the buns set and keep their shape. These rolls are sturdy enough to hold saucy toppings without going soggy.

Spread the split rolls with garlic & herb butter and lightly toast under the broiler. A light toasting firms the interior and adds flavor without making the bread too crisp. If you prefer convenience, good-quality sturdy store-bought buns also work well.

Choose your favorite hotdogs—grilled, steamed, or boiled all work. I used classic all-beef hotdogs for their familiar flavor, but use whatever you prefer. Boiling is quick and keeps them warm in the pot with the lid on until assembly.

To assemble: place a hotdog in a buttered and toasted roll, spoon heaping, mostly drained baked beans over the top, then add torn pieces of American cheese to cover. Return the assembled dogs to the broiler briefly to melt the cheese—watch closely to prevent burning. Finish with crisp, peppered bacon pieces and a generous sprinkle of finely chopped onion for crunch and brightness.

These hotdogs are a great solution when you want something fun, familiar, and budget-friendly. They’re quick to prepare, feed a family easily, and offer plenty of opportunities to adapt toppings to your taste—barbecue sauce, mustard, pickles, jalapeños, tomato wedges, or a dash of hot sauce all make great additions.

If you need simple sides, roasted potato wedges, fries, coleslaw, or a quick mac and cheese are all excellent partners for these hotdogs and help stretch the meal when serving a crowd.

These Cheesy Barbecued Baked Bean Hotdogs are ideal when you’re short on time but want something comforting and crowd-pleasing. Quick, satisfying, and economical—give them a try and enjoy a tasty, no-fuss meal the whole family will love.

Take care, enjoy the recipe, and have a wonderful weekend!

5.0 Stars (1 Review)

Ingredients

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sturdy hotdog buns (or my semi-homemade)
  • 4 Tbl. garlic & herb butter, softened (I used Minerva Dairy’s)
  • 4 hotdogs, grilled, steamed or boiled
  • 1 tall can (55 oz.) Bush’s baked beans (any flavor)
  • 4 slices American cheese, tear each slice into fourths
  • 4 strips crisp-cooked and peppered bacon
  • half of a small onion very finely chopped

Optional Ingredients:

  • mustard
  • barbecue sauce or ketchup
  • pickles, sweet or dill (sliced or spears)
  • jalapeños or peperoncini peppers
  • tomato wedges
  • hot sauce

Instructions

  • Place hotdogs in a small or medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, boil for 1 minute, then cover and remove from heat to keep warm.
  • In a separate small saucepan, warm the baked beans over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Preheat the oven broiler.
  • Split the rolls and spread the cut sides with garlic & herb butter. Broil just until the insides are lightly toasted.
  • Place a hotdog in each roll. If desired, spread a little barbecue sauce, ketchup, or mustard inside the roll. Using a slotted spoon, heap mostly drained baked beans over each hotdog.
  • Tear one slice of American cheese into pieces and arrange over the beans to cover. Return the assembled hotdogs briefly to the broiler to melt the cheese—watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Remove from the oven and top with torn bacon pieces and finely chopped onion. Add any additional toppings you like and serve immediately. Enjoy!
