Product review

What’s included: the QT40 main transceiver, a handheld microphone with PTT and keypad, a removable mounting bracket with screws, power lead with an in-line fuse, a USB programming cable, a user manual, and a limited warranty card.

Construction and size: the chassis combines a metal inner frame for RF shielding with an ABS plastic front and outer shell. The front panel houses a multi-function knob, dedicated RF and audio controls, a bright backlit display, and a large speaker behind a perforated grille. Typical mobile dimensions are approximately 6.3 x 5.5 x 1.8 inches and weight near 1.6–2.0 lb, making it easy to mount under a dash or on a desktop shelf.

Key specifications and capabilities: the unit covers roughly 28.000–29.695 MHz, delivers up to 40 W PEP transmit power, and operates in SSB, AM and FM modes (plus PA/monitor functions). It features TX and RX digital noise reduction, a PWR/RX RSSI-style signal meter for monitoring transmit and receive strength, and NOAA weather band reception with alert functionality (NOAA/Weather channels accessible and programmable). The FCC ID is T4K-ARESII.

Controls and customization: the QT40 includes CTCSS and DCS tones, ASQ/SQ tuning, RF gain control, TOT, VOX, HI-CUT and echo functions. Frequency expansion or conversions (for lawful use) can be achieved by simple internal jumper changes and by using included programming software and USB cable. The mic supports full front-panel programming for on-the-go adjustments, while the USB interface lets you transfer channel lists and tweak settings on a PC.

How it’s used: intended primarily as a vehicle/mobile transceiver, it also works as a small base station. Mount it using the supplied bracket, connect to a 13.8 V DC source, attach an appropriate antenna and tune via the front panel or PC. The NOAA alert keeps users informed of weather threats, while noise-reduction and RF gain help maintain clear contacts in busy or noisy RF environments.

Pros

  • High transmit power with SSB capability
  • Effective digital noise reduction and clear audio
  • USB programming and easy hardware mods

Cons

  • Manual is sparse; online resources often required
  • Some menu functions are awkward to access
  • May need minor internal adjustments for conversions

VerdictThe QT40 packs a surprising amount of capability into a compact mobile radio. With 40 watts output, SSB/AM/FM modes, digital TX/RX noise reduction and an easy-to-use meter, it suits drivers, outdoors users and emergency communicators who need robust audio and weather awareness. Programming via USB or mic controls and a straightforward frequency-expansion jumper make customization approachable. Exp

  1. Dale Leidigh 5/5

Solid SSB radio for hobby use

    Very nice radio.

  2. malcolm 5/5

Feature-packed 10m export with classic looks

A very capable export-style 10-meter radio with a lot of useful features. You can program it from the mic or via computer, and conversion to 11 meters is quick once the cover is off. Clean design, SSB/FM/AM modes and straightforward operation make it a versatile choice for mobile or base work.

Good hardware; check settings and support if needed

Support from the manufacturer was responsive when I had a setup problem. Converting to 11 meters was straightforward and the unit gives you tactile knobs I prefer for driving. That said, user manuals are thin and some functions took a few tries to find. I also compared it to another compact rig and kept the smaller unit for its simplicity, but the QT40 is competent and gives you useful features like echo and a meter.

  4. J LS 5/5

Small rig with solid transmit and receive performance

After doing the channel mod it worked as expected. Dead-key around 12 W, AM swings high and FM/SSB transmit are loud and clear. Receiver has good sensitivity. I'm still learning the menus, but overall I'm pleased — similar in size to other compact mobile radios and well executed.

Powerful mobile unit — great for CB conversions and vehicle use

This unit can be modified for 11-meter use and it puts out strong power. The control layout is suited for in-vehicle operation, letting you adjust knobs without looking. Weather channels are reprogrammable via PC so you can monitor local services; NR tech noticeably reduces background static. With solid TX capability it reaches stations that many small rigs miss, and the noise reduction brings out weak callers.

  6. Mark 5/5

    Surprising capability from a retro-styled 10m rig

I've been on HF for decades and tried many well-known rigs. The QT40's styling reminded me of older export radios, but it has modern features and punch. Frequency expansion is a simple jumper change, the receiver is sensitive, the stock mic sounds great and the internal speaker is loud. NRC receive filtering cleans up weak signals and the Windows programming tool recognized the cable right away. Once you learn the controls it performs very well.

Initial hiccups but excellent customer service

Customer service reached out quickly after my initial feedback and offered options. My unit arrived with an internal mic connector loose, which I found and reseated; it transmitted fine after that. The manual could be better, but online guides and support fixed the issues. Overall I'm happy with the radio and the support response.

Great CB upgrade — clear audio and strong transmit

Solidly built with smooth controls and a bright display. Audio on transmit and receive is clear, and the receiver pulls in distant stations. It delivers up to about 40 watts for good punch, and switching between 10m and 11m was easier than expected. SSB opens up extra range, and the USB port simplifies programming. Compact enough for vehicle mounting yet powerful for a small base.

  9. Maxine Martin 5/5

Exactly what I needed — strong value and features

A wonderful radio that delivered everything I wanted. Feature set and performance offer excellent value for a mobile 10-meter transceiver.

    Llegada rápida y empaque perfecto

Llegó antes de lo esperado y el empaque estaba en perfectas condiciones.
