Product review
Pack of 2 — two 1-quart pails of DAP DryDex interior/exterior spackling compound. Manufactured in the United States by Dap, each tub contains a white spackling formula packaged in a plastic pail sized for handheld use.
This compound is designed for filling holes and surface defects in gypsum, drywall, plaster and brick, and it will adhere to wood and certain plastics as well. The material is VOC-compliant and has a flash point greater than 200°F. Recommended temperature range for use and storage is roughly 0°F to 150°F.
Dry time is approximately 5 hours under typical conditions; the product’s built-in visual indicator goes on pink and turns white when the patch is dry and ready to be sanded and painted. The pails are intended for general-purpose cosmetic repairs rather than structural work, and they can be applied in layers for deeper gaps.
Pros
- Color-change indicator shows when ready to sand
- Adheres to drywall, plaster, brick, wood and some plastics
- VOC-compliant formula with low odor
Cons
- 1-quart tubs can be small for large projects
- Not intended for structural repairs or large voids
- Recoat/setting times beyond initial dry time aren’t specified
VerdictDAP DryDex 1 qt spackling in a two-pack is a reliable choice for routine patching tasks around the house. The standout feature is its pink-to-white color change that signals when the product is dry and ready for sanding or painting, which reduces guesswork. It spreads smoothly, sands cleanly, and bonds to drywall, gypsum, plaster, brick, wood and some plastics. The 1-quart pails are convenient for

My go-to for remodeling touch-ups
I use this spackle throughout remodels. It arrives pink, dries white to signal readiness, and is simple to work with—my default choice for touch-ups.

Versatile, sticks well to surfaces
Adheres smoothly and is very easy to use. The color change is convenient for timing. It’s held up nicely on multiple surfaces; I just wish the tub came in a larger size.

Stays put and easy to work with
Loved that it’s pink when wet and white when dry so you know it won’t shrink. My double pack arrived intact and sealed. It sealed a crack in my sheetrock and feels durable—I'll repurchase.

Ideal for fixing kid-made holes
Repaired a roughly 1-inch hole quickly. The indicator color made it simple to know when to sand and paint, and the patched area blended smoothly with the wall afterward.

Color-change indicator makes repairs foolproof
The pink-to-white signal takes the guesswork out of drying time. It applies smoothly to drywall, plaster, wood and brick, sands down cleanly, and layers hold up well for deeper patches. A single 1-qt tub stretches across several rooms.

Consistent and dependable
Does what it’s supposed to: dries white when ready to sand and blends well. I’d recommend it for standard patching jobs.

Not great for wide gaps
Turns white as it dries, but I found it didn’t fill wider gaps as effectively as I expected. Good for small holes but limited for larger voids.

Fast and useful for small fixes
Handy for quick household repairs. Would be nice if an applicator was included, but the compound itself is strong enough for routine patches.
