Ingredients to make strawberry habanero margaritas: tequila, strawberries, habaneros, limes, and coconut water.

Why you’ll love this recipe

These strawberry habanero margaritas deliver a bright, fruity base with a warm, spicy finish. They’re flexible: skip the habanero for a classic strawberry margarita, or add more pepper if you prefer serious heat. Fresh fruit and coconut water replace sugary mixers, keeping the drink light and naturally flavored.

Start conservatively with heat if you aren’t sure how spicy you like it. Remove seeds and membranes from the peppers to lower the heat without losing the pepper’s flavor. Read on for tips on safe pepper handling and ways to reduce spice if desired.

Prepping spicy hot peppers

Handle habaneros and other hot peppers with care. Wear food-safe gloves when cutting and seeding hot peppers to avoid transferring capsaicin to skin, eyes, or sensitive areas. If you want only a hint of heat, remove the seeds and inner membranes before blending.

If habanero is too intense for you, try a milder pepper — jalapeño provides heat with less intensity while still giving a peppery flavor.

How to make a skinny margarita

To make this margarita lighter, rely on fresh fruit and low-calorie mixers. This recipe uses fresh strawberries, lime, and coconut water rather than sweetened liqueurs. For an even lower-calorie option, substitute part or all of the coconut water with club soda to add effervescence without added sugar or calories.

Using fresh ingredients keeps flavor bright while cutting unnecessary sweetness, so you get a refreshing cocktail that feels lighter but still satisfying.

Foods to serve with margaritas

Fresh, bold flavors pair beautifully with these margaritas. Classic chips and dip are always welcome, and spicy dips like mango-habanero guacamole complement the pepper in the drink. For casual summer meals, light options such as Tex-Mex cucumber boats work well, and heartier Tex-Mex dishes like cheesy enchiladas or taco-stuffed baked potatoes also match nicely for a full meal pairing.

Choose snacks and dishes that balance the drink’s sweetness and spice: cooling salsas, creamy dips, or citrusy salads make great companions.
