DIY Citrus Salt Scrub for Radiant, Smooth Skin

Hi friends! The warm weather is here, which means it’s time to pull out the summer wardrobe. I’ll take shorts and T‑shirts over sweaters and jeans any day — and yes, no more socks! With a large family, lighter laundry and fewer layers are a welcome change.

With more skin on display, the older girls and I decided it was time to soften heels, elbows, and knees. After a bit of experimenting, I developed a fantastic homemade citrus salt scrub that softens skin and fills the room with a fresh, uplifting scent.

A few years ago my husband gave me a basket of bath and beauty products for Mother’s Day. My favorite item was a citrus salt scrub that contained olive oil and lemon. It smelled incredible, but it was pricey. I tried recreating it at home for a while but couldn’t match that scent—until I started working with essential oils.

By experimenting with different blends I finally replicated the aroma I remembered. For this recipe I used lemon essential oil and a blend called Purification, which to me smells like a spa in a bottle. The final scrub is simple to make and requires only a few ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup coarse sea salt (or crush to a finer texture if you prefer)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 drops lemon essential oil
  • 5 drops Purification essential oil blend

Directions

1. Pour the salt into a clean jar.
2. Add the olive oil and stir to combine.
3. Add the essential oils one drop at a time, stirring between additions until the scent and texture are blended to your liking.

That’s it—super easy. Adjust the amount of olive oil if you want a wetter or drier scrub, and vary the essential oil quantities to match your scent preference. I used a pint mason jar for storage, but any airtight container will work.

We rely on this scrub to soften rough spots on elbows, heels, and knees before sandal season. Because the oils make surfaces slippery, I recommend using a small foot tub or soaking just your feet in the bathtub. Rinse thoroughly and dry well to avoid slipping if you use it in the shower.

The scrub also works beautifully at the sink for hands and elbows. I keep a jar in the kitchen to freshen my hands after cooking—especially after chopping onions or garlic. The citrus aroma leaves hands feeling clean and smelling fresh.
