Are Costco’s New Cookies & Cream Mini Cakes Worth Buying?

Cruising through the warehouse, I try to resist the temptations of the bakery section — it’s harder than it sounds. I often check the produce area for new salad kits before allowing myself to browse baked goods, hoping that strategy will make the cakes and cookies less tempting. On a recent trip, that plan failed spectacularly.

The new Costco Cookies N Cream mini cakes caught my eye. At first I didn’t put them in the cart, but they kept nagging at me from the shelf. I ended up walking back from the checkout to grab a box.

We’d seen Reddit posts about these treats, but wanted to test them ourselves. Are they any good?

What Are Costco Mini Cakes?

Costco Mini Cakes are single-serve desserts found in the warehouse bakery. Each mini cake is about the size of a large muffin, and the toppings rotate seasonally so you’ll often find different flavors and decorations every few months.

The Cookies N Cream mini cakes appeared in early January 2024. These are chocolate mini cakes topped with a cookies-and-cream frosting and a scattering of crumbled Oreo-like cookies.

Costco has offered a cookies-and-cream style dessert before — back in 2021 there was a cookies-and-cream iteration featuring yellow cupcakes topped with a chocolate chip cookie — but the current chocolate mini cakes are a different take.

A Costco Cookies N Cream Mini Cakes Review — Are They Any Good?

Costco Cookies N Cream Mini Cakes Closeup View

Visually these mini cakes are very appealing, but we were worried they might be dry — something that can happen with mass-produced chocolate muffins. That concern proved unfounded. The Costco Cookies N Cream mini cakes were moist, tender, and flavorful.

The chocolate flavor is pronounced and more solid than typical muffins, yet not overwhelming or overly sweet. The frosting is plentiful and rich, which one small critic at our table grumbled about, but most of us saw that as a positive. Everyone at our table quickly fell silent while digging in.

“Mini cake” is an accurate label: these are larger than a homemade cupcake, roughly double in size, so for some that could be too much. Several of us split a cake in half and saved the remainder for later. Considering the price — a six-pack for $8.99 — you get a good value.

Overall, we would buy these again. They make an attractive, crowd-pleasing dessert for a reasonable price and deliver good texture and flavor.

How Long Do Costco Cookies N Cream Mini Cakes Last?

Fresh from the store, these mini cakes will stay at good quality for about five days. After that the texture and flavor may decline. If you don’t plan to finish them within that time, freezing is a good option — even with the icing still on.

How to Freeze Costco Cookies N Cream Mini Cakes:

  1. Place the mini cakes uncovered on a tray in the freezer for about one hour to firm up the frosting.
  2. Remove them from the freezer and wrap each cake tightly with plastic wrap, then wrap again with aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.
  3. Store the wrapped cakes in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to six months.

How to Defrost Costco Cookies N Cream Mini Cakes:

  1. Remove the cakes from the freezer and discard the outer wrappings.
  2. Leave them uncovered on the counter for 1–2 hours to defrost. Keeping them uncovered helps prevent sogginess.
